Hello!
I read that the Black Crowes recently covered "This is the Way" live, unfortunately I didn't get to catch any of their San Francisco shows to see for myself.
Who's going to Bimbo's in on Oct. 30?

Cripple Crow, labels, tour and such.

Some relativly new Devendra news that i have been meaning to post, some contradictory and unconfirmed. But still exciting.

1. A release for the album says: "This new album finds Devendra continuing his extraordinary growth as a writer, vocalist, and musician. Songs like 'Now That I Know' and 'I Do Dig a Certain Girl' among others provide more of the hushed, mysterious acoustic alchemy that delighted listeners on preceding set though the new tunes show still greater artistic depth and delicacy."

Cripple Crow will be released in North America on September 13 by XL Recordings. Tracklist:

01 Now That I Know
02 Santa Maria Da Feira
03 Heard Somebody Say
04 Long Haired Child
05 Lazy Butterfly
06 Quedate Luna
07 Queen Bee
08 I Feel Just Like a Child
09 Some People Ride the Wave
10 The Beatles
11 Dragonflies
12 When They Come
13 Inaniel
14 Hey Mama Wolf
15 Hows About Tellin' a Story
16 Chinese Children
17 Sawkill River
18 I Love That Man
19 Luna De Margarita
20 Korean Dogwood
21 Little Boys
22 Anchor

2. Devendra has been signed to beggars Banquet here in the USA, and XL Recordings elsewhere. He’s apparently at work on a new album. We are pleased and proud to have the music we release by him on YGR, and it made perfect sense for him to move to a larger label. We reached a certain point where we could simply not keep up with the success he was achieving. We’re a small label, and want to stay that way. So, we wish him the best as he now flies screaming and laughing through the universe! All of his YGR releases of course remain available through this website (as well as in stores)…

3.Here is a very preliminary sketch of the fall tour DevendraBanhart/ The Bunnybrains These dates are not set in stone, rather they are placeholders until the fine details get ironed out with a antique slab of metal..So read and digest with a grain of salt. >

Video from recording the new album

Hey there--

My name's Mike and I just joined Tribe/ this group/ etc. the other day -- was pleased to see so many DB fans on here -- I saw him like three years ago and we became instant pals -- I love him to death! So, anyway, I'm sure people know that Devendra has been recording a very interesting (and different) new album in upstate New York this whole month -- lots of amazing people have been in for the sessions -- check it out, my friend Jona aka YACHT just posted this rad video showing the crew recording and goofing around.

Dev's rant at the beginning is fricking hilarious: http://www.teamyacht.com/movies/Bearsville-Jams.html

Ohh, and the new issue of my 'zine YETI has three great unreleased DB tunes on the CD that comes with it. A'ight. Hope you enjoy.

--Mike

"at the hop" from the album "nino rojo," with the b-side being a live version of the same song. beautiful artwork, too. a bit different than his classic work, but really nice all the same. i believe this import 7" is somewhat limited, so grab a copy if you see it!

devendra in SF

i was late to the show. i walked in on the beginning of a beautiful version of WeAllKnow. were there many tunes before that?
then he brought the band out.

the band kinda bummed me out. not enough devendra. his solo shows seem like they are on a more serious psychedelic vibe. the band was goofy and lame except the drummer and the guitar player on the left-Noah- i believe. he was playing interesting and subltly, giving Devendra his space. the bass player and vetiver guy were pretty distracting.

overall good show, but no where near as powerful as the last 3 or 4 times he played in SF.

just my 2 cents....

Hi! I just joined the tribe and, like the last poster, am really glad to see that someone started a tribe for DB! Devendra has both an amazing talent and voice. I am looking forward to hearing his new work. I was curious what he is like live. I've heard he doesn't play much of his recorded stuff? Fact or fiction? I am also curious about how comprable his voice is live to his recorded work. Can he hit those really, really high notes live?

Thanks again!

So glad to see this tribe in existance. If it didn't I was going to start it!
I was just recently introduced to D. by a good
friend. She is a radio person and a friend of D's and
played for me his new album which she recieved as
promo to play on the air.
Fucking Brilliant are the only words that come to
mynd.
The kind of music where you just put in a disc and
hit 'repeat' , if you know what I mean.
So yeah, thanks for starting the tribe and giving me
a place to blab about Devendra.

Peas.

Straight from the mouth of Young God Records:
-------------------------------------------

::: we have finished recording and mixing 2 (two!) entire new albums
by the young savant devendra banhart. the first album, entitled
"rejoicing in the hands" will be released by ygr in late april. the
second album is set for release in late september. we recorded all
this material at the old southern house of lynn bridges on the
alabama/georgia border, using fine vintage gear and the natural
acoustics of the living room where devendra played his songs. it's a
natural step forward from devendra's previous "handmade" recordings.
better sound, but definitely not sterile or slick in any way. his
performances are amazing. we did a series of (generally sparse)
overdubs up here in brooklyn, and the final result is, in my mind
anyway, just amazing. it's an honor to have been involved in this
project! the songs (32 in total, culled from a trove of 57 we chose
from) are simply stunning - ranging from devendra's patented magical
whimsy to deeply soulful ballads. I'm so proud of this kid!!!!
..we'll have some soundbites up at the site soon, along with more
info...

----------------------------------------------------------
I totally hope the rest of the 57 songs show up somewhere.....

Kill Rock Star Records if going to put out a cool comp with an unreleased Devendra track on it, "Poughkeepsi" [demo]. I'm resonably sure this is his home recorded version of the song he played live on the WMFU broadcast last year. Also tis comp has tracks from other rad people such as Xiu Xiu, Gravy Train, and Nedelle. Read on for more info:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Following the class act of the compilation trilogy Kill Rock Stars, Stars Kill Rock, and Rock Stars Kill, KRS has announced the second release in the next wave-- Tracks and Fields. The follow-up to last year's Fields and Streams (and precursor to the future finale Roads and Tracks), Tracks and Fields will feature 41 previously unreleased tracks from 41 bands, and if you're reading Pitchfork right now (and I think we both know that you are), there's a good chance you'll be interested in more than a few of them. According to KRS founder and label honcho Slim Moon, the compilation will be out on March 9th, 2004, and the tracklist will be like so:
It was a nice intimate outdoors and Devendra ended up playing the whole set with Vetiver. So if you have a chance to make it tomorrow, Saturday April 3rd, to their show in Nevada City maybe he will end up playing with them there. Also let me know if you need company cause I would love to check them out again since I missed Cocorosies show tonight at Amoeba and Bottom Of The Hill. Also Vetiver will be playing on the 18th at Cafe Du Nord with Brightblack and Paz. Maybe I will see you there.

pss. I am still looking to trade for any Devendra/Vetiver/Joanna/Cocorosie live recording that any of you out there may have.
I went by Tang Li Wheebs then and he was the Mole. Kind of gushing and silly...

Devendra is so totally dreamy. So far in my short life as a music reviewer this is easily the best release that I have received. 22 perfectly rough 4-track recordings ranging from a mighty 4 minutes down to a bite size 39 seconds show you a deeply touching songwriter in the beginning of a hopefully long and prosperous career. Just Devendra's beautiful voice, acoustic guitar and an occasional passing car frame this collection of heartfelt, wonderful, and magical songs. Musically Devendra lies somewhere in the family of Marc Bolan's Tyrannosaurus Rex, Vashti Bunyan, and John Fruciante's Niandra Lades, with an added dash of Syd Barrett's whimsy thrown on top. I just can't live with the thought of possibly never hearing anymore from this amazing young man, so go check the record out and give him some well-deserved attention. [Tang Li Wheebs]

This guy has a pretty different sound - I like it. Thumbs up. [The Mole]

Banhart will cover a song from the forthcoming Xiu Xiu record called "Support Out Troops Oh!" and Xiu Xiu will cover a song called "The Body Breaks," from Banhart's forthcoming record.

Not sure on the label or anything yet, but it sounds fun.

A new split cd.

Looks like Tract Records(www.tractrecords.com) will be releasing a new cd featuring Devendra Banhart along with songs from Bay Area musician Joanna Newsom. Also they have released/are releasing "Eye Of The Beholder Vol 3" which features an alternate recording of Devendras "Onward The Indian", here titled "Nature Walk".

Here is their words on the split:

The split CD with Devendra Banhart is being worked on this month and a partner has been announced. JOANNA NEWSOM: A fine harp player and vocalist who has recently signed to DRAG CITY records will supply the second half of the CD. Look for this release toward the end of the year.
